When reading this/next month’s issue of gamesTM (I’m an avid subscriber), this was one of the few stories that stood out, and is something that is truly disturbing if it turns out to be true.

Gamestation (“That’s Gamestation.” PLUG) have been reported to be pulling most of it’s retro games from the shelves, and also destroying them. As in hammering them, burning them etc etc.

A quote from the magazine states that “The bulk of these titles are games that are highly unlikely to sell - such as very old sports games - but there are also many under-the-radar classics that have been inadvertantly destroyed. Our source tells us that an official list exists that outlines exactly which games to preserve. These are mostly from recognisable franchises such as Sonic the Hedgehog and Final Fantasy and will continue to be sold within Gamestation stores. There are, however, a number of less obvious but nevertheless rare and desirable games that are not accounted for on the list.”

They then go to state that they have personally heard of two undisclosed Saturn games (Who’s betting one is NiGHTS into Dreams?) not featuring on the list.

If anyone is reading this who has a Gamestation near them, I recommend you either try to do an FoI request on them (It might work; I don’t know the intricacies of the law, or whether they would indeed fall for it), or ask them for all the games that are not on this list, and either make a list yourself, take a digital photo and write up the names, or just outright buy them and sell them on eBay. You should be able to get them for peanuts.
